Gender Economics and the Workplace

Welcome to the webpage of the Nuremberg Conference on

Gender Economics and the Workplace, November 8-9 2018

Economics has traditionally attributed gender differences in labour market outcomes (e.g., occupation, position, pay) to demand-side factors, such as taste-based and statistical discrimination by employers, and the design of institutions (e.g. access to child care). However, recent experimental and empirical research has revealed that supply-side factors, such as psychological characteristics, negotiation patterns, and social and economic preferences, differ between men and women.

To advance our understanding of gender-related differences in the workplace and in economic decision-making, the Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) are jointly organising a conference on Gender Economics and the Workplace.

The two-day conference seeks to bring together experimental, quasi-experimental and non-experimental empirical research on gender issues. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Gender gaps in educational choices and outcomes
  • Family (formation), child care, and the gender gap in labour market outcomes
  • The impact of institutions (e.g. wage-setting regimes) on the gender gap in labour market outcomes
  • Evidence on the causes of the gender gap in labour market outcomes
  • Innovations in the workplace and their impact on gender inequalities in the labour market

The keynote lectures will be delivered by Professor Dorothea Kübler (WZB Berlin and Technical University Berlin) and Professor Friederike Mengel (University of Essex).

In addition, we will be organising a mentoring session in which successful women from academia and the industry share their own experiences and discuss career perspectives for highly-qualified women.

We invite researchers to submit full papers for a presentation (there will be no parallel sessions); submitters should also be willing to discuss the paper of an assigned fellow presenter. Researchers might also submit preliminary papers or extended abstracts for a poster session.

Thanks to our generous funders, there will be no conference fees. Accommodation will be provided for all presenters (excluding poster presentations). Participants can also apply for travel allowance (limited funds available) if their travel expenses are not covered by their home institution.

Please use our submission form to submit your manuscript.
